Charles Black

Charleston, SC

Beautiful, traditional lathe-turned bowls, platters, wine stoppers and ornaments, artfully crafted from a wide variety of different wood species. In creating his one-of-a-kind pieces, Charlie begins with a rough section of wood and plans the completed vessel by studying the grain patterns, color variations, and bark. The wood block is rotated on a turning lathe while specialized hand tools, gouges and chisels are used to shape the piece, requiring intense concentration and skilled control. Charlie often emphasizes the organic beauty of his pieces with asymetrical lines and natural bark edges. On the bottom of each piece you will find a woodburning of his signature and the type of wood used. His pieces are finely finished and sealed with polyurethane. They are versatile as both decorative art objects and as functional, food safe serving pieces.
