Crafts Cooperative

Charleston Crafts is a cooperative. All exhibiting members take part in the management and operation of the cooperative and the gallery.

Organization Statement

Charleston Crafts Cooperative is the oldest craft cooperative in Charleston, SC. We began in 1989 as a pilot project of Piccolo Spoleto at a downtown garage. In October of 2009 we moved to our current location on 161 Church Street. Through hurricanes and other major and minor disasters, we have persevered as a group committed to craft art and crafts artists.

Charleston Crafts Cooperative’s organizational goals include operating a retail gallery featuring the work of our members and promoting community awareness of art and craft through outreach activities. These activities include organizing craft shows, holding open houses and artist demonstrations and participating with other Charleston organizations to promote locally produced goods.

The cooperative currently has over 40 exhibiting members. All members work and live in South Carolina. The members apply through a jury process and pay dues and staff the gallery once every four weeks. Members also serve on various committees to help organize the gallery, select new members, and handle PR and advertising, gallery maintenance, etc.

The gallery itself features traditional and contemporary work by our member craft artists in a variety of craft media including basketry, clay, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, origami, photography, surface design and wood. We are the only local craft gallery that only sells crafts made in South Carolina. The gallery is open seven days a week from 10 am to 6 pm.
